Current mood: Heh. Wow. Ouch.
I think I am in love! I finally got around to watching the video of Stephen Colbert's roast (and in this case, roast being not so much defined as a "banquet honoring a person who is subjected to humorous tongue-in-cheek ridicule by friends," as an event in which the celebrant is roasted on a spit, screaming into roaring flames on a beach where tribal natives are dancing around with fork- and knife-like implements in hand...) of the Prez at the White House Correspondents' Dinner and it is a thing of beauty! He looks genial and unassuming, but there are no sucker punches here - big, meaty, gut shots, all the way. Some of my favorites:
"I believe the government that governs best is the government that governs least. And by these standards, we have set up a fabulous government in Iraq."
"The greatest thing about this man is he's steady. You know where he stands. He believes the same thing Wednesday that he believed on Monday, no matter what happened Tuesday. Events can change; this man's beliefs never will."
"But, listen, let's review the rules. Here's how it works. The President makes decisions. He's the decider. The press secretary announces those decisions, and you people of the press type those decisions down. Make, announce, type. Just put 'em through a spell check and go home. Get to know your family again. Make love to your wife. Write that novel you got kicking around in your head. You know, the one about the intrepid Washington reporter with the courage to stand up to the administration? You know, fiction!"
Wicked. Awesome. It's really too bad that the only people talking about this are liberal bloggers - talk about preaching to the choir! Now more than ever, I wish I got Comedy Central...
